In 2018, we established our global DEI Council, which is comprised of 17 senior leaders. Carlyle’s DEI Council meets at least three times a year to review and refine the firmwide DEI Strategy, help create inclusive environments, and work to build the systems needed to embed diversity and inclusion across our business segments

Data consistently shows that diversity is not just a social priority—it is a financial advantage. Companies with diverse leadership make better investment decisions, drive higher returns, and experience stronger growth.

In an analysis of investment portfolios, companies with two or more diverse board members demonstrated significantly higher earnings growth compared to those without diversity. After controlling for industry and market conditions, firms with diverse boards experienced financial growth at a rate nearly five times higher, with each diverse board member contributing to an average 5% increase in annualized earnings growth.

Advancing Board Diversity in Investments

At Caryle Finance, we recognize that diverse leadership drives better financial outcomes. Over the years, we have made significant progress in diversifying the boards of the companies we invest in, ensuring that our investment strategies in loans, grants, and financial markets reflect our commitment to inclusivity and strong governance.

In 2016, we set a goal to establish diverse boards across all majority-owned companies within two years of acquiring control. At the time, 38% of eligible boards met this standard. By 2020, this figure had risen to 88%, with full compliance in our flagship investment funds. Expanding on this success, we set a new global target: 30% of board seats in our corporate investment portfolio would be held by diverse directors by 2023. We exceeded this goal ahead of schedule, reaching 32% in Q3 2022.

By embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into our investment strategies, we strengthen businesses and maximize financial growth. As of March 31, 2023, more than 340 board seats across our portfolio companies have been filled with diverse directors. This progress is partly due to linking incremental DEI milestones to credit facilities totaling over $8 billion across the U.S., Europe, and Asia—delivering measurable cost savings when diversity targets are met.

Our investment evaluation process now includes a dedicated DEI assessment, allowing us to track and influence diversity progress within the industry. As a result, 74% of our financial commitments have gone to firms demonstrating strong DEI efforts. Notably, capital allocated to firms ranked as advanced in DEI increased from 9% in 2021 to 30% by late 2022, reflecting our commitment to supporting inclusive investment practices.

Beyond financial support, we use our investment network to drive real-world impact. For example, we have introduced innovative hiring solutions to portfolio companies, improving diversity in talent acquisition. Several firms have already implemented these technologies, with more expected to adopt them soon.
